DIJON 2004 - Tournaments 3Rd INTERNATIONAL HISTORICAL EUROPEAN MARTIAL ARTS GATHERING April 8 – 12, Dijon |
![]() |
This year, you will have the opportunity to participate in two tournaments ; the main goal is to try out our techniques in a secure environment, and most of all to have fun. Victory is, at best, secondary. Each tournament will take the form of short bouts with padded weapons and/or protections. You will know more about these by scrolling down this page. Each competitor shall confirm he thoroughly knows the following rules. Any misbehaviour will result in the immediate exclusion from the entire Event, without possible refund. Smallsword Tournament. Resp. : Matt Easton. RULES : Bouts will be commenced by a Judge saying 'Commence' when the contestants are at an adequate distance. Starting before this order or starting too close to the opponent will result in the bout being restarted or disciplining for repeat-offenders. When anyone cries “HOLD!” all fencing must stop immediately. SCORING The loser of each bout shall be the first to lose 3 points. Each contestant has one 'life' of 3 points. Once you lose one bout, you are out of the tournament. Thus the tournament is direct elimination. A solid thrust to the main torso, head/face and neck counts for 3 points, and represents a 'kill'. A solid thrust to any part of the limbs (including hands) counts for 1 point, and represents debilitating injury. A solid thrust only can score - where the blade would have penetrated the person, had the point been sharp. Light touches will not be noted and the Judges should not cry HOLD for them. Excessive force should not be used though, and will be disciplined. HOLD shall be cried after a solid thrust, fencing must stop, and the strike be scored by the Judges. The bout will then be continued upon their command “Commence”, starting at the designated distance again. Either of the contestants can cry HOLD if they believe they have received a good thrust, but not if they believe they have given a good thrust. Gentlemanly and honourable conduct is expected. Judges decisions are final and Judges can vote to a majority amongst themselves if there is indecision between them. Arguing with Judges can result in disqualification, at the Judges discretion. DOUBLE-STRIKES If both contestants strike each other simultaneously, or almost simultaneously then both contestants' strikes score. If there is a reasonable pause between strikes then the first strike counts only, as the second attack may well have been prevented by the effects of receiving the first attack (pain, shock, reflex action etc). If both contestants score a 3 point strike simultaneously then they are both 'dead', and out of the competition. If both contestants strike simultaneously and one makes a 3 point strike while the other makes a 1 point strike, then the 3 point strike always wins the bout, even if the contestant making the 1 point strike has reached 3 points total upon that final strike. Contestant X may score for two thrusts on Contestant Y if they are given with immediate effect, as simultaneously as humanly possible. If there is any degree of pause between strikes then only the first will count, as the second will land after the Judges cry HOLD. NOT ALLOWED No cuts are allowed. Throwing the weapon is not allowed. No extra items, aside from the sword, may be used in the tournament, such as cloaks, daggers etc A contestant using unfair and dishonourable tactics (such as 'slashing' with the blade to cause pain) can be disqualified from the tournament. Contestants using excessive force or getting out of control will be disqualified and dishonoured. OTHER ALLOWED ATTACKS Disarms are allowed, but if the integrity of the epee blades is at risk then the Judges may cry HOLD and the bout will restart (for safety reasons). Grabbing the point end (weak) of the blade is not acceptable – in grabbing an opponent’s blade one must grab the medium, forte or hilt. A grabbed point can result in a point being awarded in favour of the person whose blade was grabbed. This rule is enforced at the Judges’ discretion. The off-hand can be used to parry (but is vulnerable to a 1 point thrust if it receives a strike from the point). Grappling/wrestling and striking with the body is allowed, but will be moderated and stopped by the Judges upon the cry of HOLD when they see fit. Attacks with the body and limbs are allowed (such as knees, punches etc), but must not be excessive or executed to injure - they must be pulled and not dangerous. Abuse of this rule may result in disqualification. A successful and controlled disarm or assault with a body part (such as punch, kick etc) can score 1 point, at the Judge's discretion. However, such assaults must be carried out safely and not in a way to cause injury. EQUIPMENT All equipment will be provided by the organisers, but contestants may wear additional protection, such as personal groin protectors, if they so wish. Contestants may also wear their own fencing masks if they so wish, so long as they meet the safety requirements. The weapons and equipment should not be abused by the contestants under any circumstances (including grappling or disarming in such a way that may endanger the epee blades). Doing so may result in disciplining or disqualification from the tournament. GENERAL During the tournament no other people, besides the Contestants and Judges may enter the designated area, unless for medical reasons. Contestants shall be paired randomly, using a ticket system, for each round of the tournament. Judges reserve the right to disqualify any contestant or to prevent any person from taking part in the tournament. Sidesword/Backsword/Broadsword Tournament. Resp. : Carlo Parisi. Scoring targets are as follows: 3 points: 2 points: 1 point: Judges cry HOLD when they consider a valid offence has been made (taking into account how sharp swords react to clothing and body parts) - where the blade would have injured the person, had the point been sharp. Non-offensive touches will not be noted and the Judges should not cry HOLD for them. Excessive force should not be used though, and will be disciplined. HOLD shall be cried after a valid offence, fencing must stop, and the strike be scored by the Judges. The bout will then be continued upon their command “Commence”, starting at the designated distance again. Contestants using excessive force or getting out of control will be disqualified and dishonoured. OTHER ALLOWED ATTACKS Disarms are allowed, but if the integrity of the swords is at risk then the Judges may cry HOLD and the bout will restart. Grabbing the blade is allowed, but if the Judges deem that the grab would have injured the person grabbing, then HOLD will be cried and the grabber will have a point scored against them. This rule is enforced at the Judges’ discretion. The off-hand can be used to parry thrusts (but is vulnerable to a 1 point thrust if it receives a strike from the point).
